Welcome to my Sunroom!
I currently live in northeast Atlanta and I care for a growing collection of orchids that combines my passion for both the science of orchid cultivation and the art of beautiful display. I like to focus on creating an environment where my plants can thrive, while adding serenity and elegance to my living space.
I’m happy to share my personal collection, growing experiences, and my favorite resources. You'll find recommendations for trusted vendors I personally use, links to YouTube experts who have helped guide my orchid journey, and various sites that I've found valuable in developing my knowledge and skills.
This site is my way of documenting my orchid growing adventure and sharing what I've learned with fellow enthusiasts. Whether you're just beginning your orchid journey or are an experienced grower, I hope you'll find inspiration and useful information here.
My Collection
Currently numbering around two dozen orchids, my orchids grow both in my sunroom and under supplemental lighting. I have a variety of species and hybrids that seem to do well in my environment. I display my collection in attractive containers that complement their natural beauty. Unlike traditional greenhouse growing, I integrate my plants into my home décor.
My Environment
As any indoor grower knows, it can be difficult to maintain optimal growing conditions. My sunroom does not have any direct southern or eastern exposure, which is a challenge, and explains why I don’t have a Cattleya or Vanda collection! My southeast window gets morning sun and my northwest window brightens up in the afternoon. I do have four skylights, which helps a lot.
Because my sunroom is 400 square feet and has windows on three sides winters, at night especially, it’s fairly cool and generally drop to mid-60s. The winter phals love that. It is also very dry, with humidity often around 20 percent. Summers are hot and humid and because we keep the house relatively cool, around 72 degrees, the A/C lowers humidity to typically no more than 45-55 percent. I water consistently but I since I don’t have greenhouse-level humidity air roots often dry out.
In the next few months I am planning a permanent move to northern Delaware. The home I choose will definitely have a sunroom, selected for perfect exposure. I also plan to install a food forest and hopefully a backyard greenhouse where my orchids can live during the summer.
