Aergs biloba

Aerangis biloba

(species)

Pictured above is the orchid I have recently added to my collection. It is growing a new root and I hope for it to bloom next summer or fall. The picture of the orchid in bloom is credited to Airborne Pilot.

My orchid is potted in a net pot with sphag moss. I place that inside another larger net pot so I can leave 1/2 inch of water after watering as recommended by the AOS. It grows under lights on a heat mat.

I purchased my Aerangis at Rainbeau Orchids in Milton, GA.

History and Features

The Aerangis biloba is a small, elegant epiphytic orchid native to tropical Africa, particularly found in regions from Sierra Leone to Angola. This miniature orchid typically produces pure white, waxy flowers that are about 1-2 inches across, growing on slender stems (inflorescences).

The plant features two-lobed leaves (hence the species name "biloba"), which are thick and leathery, growing in a fan-like arrangement. The leaves are typically dark green and relatively small, matching the compact nature of the plant.

The fragrance of Aerangis biloba is particularly notable - it produces a sweet, jasmine-like scent that is most intense at night. This nocturnal fragrance suggests that the orchid evolved to attract night-pollinating moths in its natural habitat.

Aerangis biloba was first described scientifically in 1865 by John Lindley, a prominent British botanist who made significant contributions to orchid taxonomy. Like many African orchids, it was discovered during the period of European exploration and colonization of Africa in the 19th century.

The genus name "Aerangis" comes from Greek words meaning "air vessel," referring to these orchids' epiphytic nature - growing on trees rather than in soil. In cultivation, this species has become popular among orchid enthusiasts who appreciate its compact size, making it suitable for windowsill growing, and its fragrant night-blooming flowers.

Culture

Temperature

  • This African orchid prefers intermediate to warm conditions:

  • Day: 75-85°F (24-29°C)

  • Night: 60-65°F (16-18°C)

Can tolerate occasional higher temperatures with good air movement

- Minimum winter temperature should not go below 55°F (13°C)

Light

  • Bright indirect light to partial shade

  • No direct sun except early morning or late afternoon

  • Grows well under LED lights

  • Leaf color should be medium to light green

  • Red tinge on leaves indicates too much light

Water

  • Keep consistently moist but not soggy during growing season

  • Allow to dry slightly between waterings

  • Reduce watering in winter but never allow to dry completely

  • Prefers water quality with low dissolved solids

  • Morning watering recommended to allow foliage to dry

Potting and Media:

  • Small pots or mounts work well due to compact size

  • Can be mounted on cork, tree fern, or small wooden slabs

  • If potted, use well draining media.

Additional Notes:

- Regular but weak fertilizer during growing season

- Good air movement essential

- Annual repotting usually not necessary if properly potted
